The Le Mans Cathedral illuminated by the lights used on big feast days,
welcomes the teachers, the pupils past and present, the parents and friends
to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the school‚s presence in the parish.

200 years of history! Impossible to resume it here..But, witnesses from long ago are happily still present, like living stones, to pass on to the new generations the brightness of a life filled with moments of glory and more sombre moments that this old lady, the Institution Saint Julien, (St Ju for the regular visitors) has experienced. The school began in a modest way in 1805 in the old quarter, a poor area, at the request of the Bishop of the diocese. He asked that the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Evron, newly regrouped in the Abbey in Evron, to come and teach the children of Saint Julien‚s parish. Even when it became established in the rue Tascher, the school always kept the mark of its humble beginnings in its closeness to the children and young people particularly those in difficulty and in its acceptance of the young girls from the „Ecole Normale des Instituteurs‰ (teacher training) for denominational schools. Even in financially difficult times, a pupil would never be refused because they were unable to pay their fees. A solution was always found. It was the spirit of the house. It is also the spirit of Perrine Thulard, foundress of the congregation of sisters who built this work of teaching and education. And it is in the same spirit, today, that the teaching and domestic staff continue to spread forth the initial work. The congregation is grateful to them.

According to the legend Saint Julien, on arrival in Le Mans, made a source spring up by striking a rock as Moses did in the desert. At the side of the well the Samaritan woman learnt from Jesus the true source of life: it is He Himself. Perhaps the Institution Saint Julien resembles a well. Many past pupils, teachers also, and others, discovered a meaning to life. They became, in their turn, bearers of the "source" that gives life. During the Eucharist, we enjoyed singing: "listen to the source within you that speaks of love, listen to the source within you that helps you to pray".

May the Saint Julien Institution continue to refresh those thirsting for justice, for peace, for happiness so that the knowledge acquired may serve a world where the human person comes first because it is God‚s work, He who is creator of all life.
