“Escuela de Formacion Cristiana”

6- in Peru - Date of publication 07-10-2004
For the past twenty years, in the greater district of San Juan de Lurigancho, a training program was established by one of the priests in view of the on-going formation of lay Christians and more particularly of pastoral workers.

Over three weeks, classes of three hours per evening are given from Monday to Friday. A total of four subjects are dealt with, including: the History of Peru; the Social Sciences; Biblical Theology and Child Psychology. As we are new to the country, Father Humberto wanted Marie-Françoise and myself, Rosanne, to participate in these classes. We have really enjoyed them !

So, from January 19th to February 5th we returned back to school. In the history classes we skimmed over several centuries from the Kingdom of the Incas and even prior to this period along to the Spanish conquest with all its consequences right up to the present day. In the Social Sciences classes we looked at the results and propositions of the Commission “Truth and Reconciliation” with its rights and obligations for today’s citizens. We were able to look at some of the problems that affect our country such as: discrimination, corruption and the difficult road towards true democracy.

The Biblical Theology classes were familiar to us; however, they provided us with the occasion to talk about the bible in Spanish. The link that was made in these classes with our present day reality was particularly interesting.

For the classes in child psychology we worked in small groups of nine along with a psychologist according to a theme of personal benefit but bringing us to a greater openness in view of helping others, as well. The sharing was uncomplicated and the participants shared readily.

And then there was an examination ! We had to choose five articles either from a newspaper or a television program and make the link with the class content we had received. It is a very interesting method designed to help us deepen our knowledge! The next two years will extend and deepen what we have already begun in this year’s classes.
I also took part in a two week intensive training program in family catechises at a national level. Now we have to implement all that we have learned into daily practise especially now that we have moved onto the actual site of our mission.
