Peruvian Congregational Leaders meet in Lima.....

6- in Peru - Date of publication 12-05-2011
The Peruvian National Conference of Major Superiors was held from November 22nd to the 25th in Pueblo Libre, Lima.

The first day of our conference was dedicated to the theme of human trafficking.  This dehumanizing reality is an urgent cry affecting families everywhere, especially youth seeking work, a way of getting ahead in life and travel opportunities.  Those who attract others for the purpose of controlling and confining them offer incredible promises that never materialize; instead those coming to work discover they are victims usually after having their identity documents removed, being confined to a very limited area and being obliged to work long hours in Bars and Night Clubs most often also forced into prostitution.

The trafficking process moves from capturing persons and transfering them to an unfamiliar and often remote site gaining their confidence through promises and then subjecting them to strict traveling or visiting restrictions confining them to a small area while detaining their identity documents.....the resulting exploitation may be sexual, work related and/or trafficking of human organs.

The next two days of this annual conference were dedicated to the theme of "living responsibly" taken from the experience and wisdom of Jung.  Living responsibly is a humanizing process that does not follow straight lines.  Each human being is born "to live". Who am I?  I am challenged to grow in the discovery and acceptance of myself as totally accepted by God and precious in God´s sight.  In religious life the vows are important pillars at the very basis of this process, calling us to an on-going development and ever greater fullness as we share God´s gift of life with others.  Is our thrust geared towards productivity or is it placed firmly in the task of entering into the process of living ever more responsibly?  Some tension is essential for the healthy unfolding and development of the humanizing process.  Where do we spend our energy?   In what areas is our energy tied-up?   We are challenged to become ever more fully human regardless of the particular circumstances life presents us with, happy to respond creatively and intentionally in favour of a greater quality of life for all.
