The Assumption

2- in France - Date of publication 11-16-2009
The Centenary of the Sisters arrival in Canada which was celebrated on the 15th August 2009 could not leave those of us in France indifferent.

The Intercom leadership team took it upon themselves to organise a celebration on the feast of Our Lady’s Assumption. Evron was chosen so that as many Sisters as possible from the 3 entities could take part in this Congregation event.

Thus, at 11 0’clock, the Intercom Sisters came together in St Joseph’s House: everyone was happy to meet up and exchange news and also share an aperitif with the Sister from the House while listening to a few words from Sister Colombe Georget.

As the afternoon promised to be busy we quickly began the meal. Some Sisters joined those from St Joseph’s, while others picnicked in the Mambre and St Anne rooms (even though the Abbey had been empty since the 3rd June) where the tables had been decorated the evening before with cloths and flowers by some of the Sisters and associates.

After the meal there was time to rest, to chat or to go to the Residence Perrine Thulard to prepare the multi-purpose room as soon as the older Sisters had finished eating. The kindness and availability of the staff was a great help in arranging the room where, as well as the residents, there would be about 90 people from outside: Sisters from St Joseph’s and Intercom as well as some friends and associates. We had to move the tables, arrange the chairs, prepare the altar for Mass, get ready for a puppet show and make sure the aisles were large enough for the wheel chairs. It wasn’t an easy task!!

At the time fixed everyone was present. What a beautiful gathering: nearly all the Sisters in France were present in the same place!! There was peace and joy on all the faces. Strong links bind us together here in France but also to our Sisters and friends in Canada.  The celebration was ready to begin. Sister Anne-Marie Denoual intoned the song “ma cabane au Canada” to which she added a few verses composed by herself. The tune was known by everyone and all joined in. Then Sister Germaine Delangle gave a puppet show recalling in a humorous way the arrival of the pioneers in Canada.

Then, it was the turn of Sisters Marie-Jo Legeay and Launay who arrived disguised in ill-assorted garments for a very funny sketch relating their own journey to Canada a 100 years later, that is in the present time… Of course things have changed somewhat since the heroic days of the pioneers!! But all the same the spirit of the predecessors is still alive...

The atmosphere was very relaxed in spite of the heat in the room. The air-conditioning was not very effective. It is true to say that “progress is great providing it works!!”

The culmination of this feast was of course the Eucharist celebrated by Father Esnault. The liturgy, simple and prayerful, had been prepared by a group of Sisters and was led by Sister Colombe Royer. At the offertory procession the flowers were carried to the altar by Sister Odette Blin in her wheel chair. Odette is a “symbol” for all of us and everyone in the assembly was very moved...

Father Esnault’s homily was very appropriate. We were all united in thanksgiving with our Canadian sisters and those who had joined them for the celebrations.

After Mass cakes and fresh drinks were served and were greatly appreciated by everyone as it was really very hot.

Then it was time to say goodbye before dispersing. Each one left with the memory of what had been shared and a desire to have similar meetings in the future.

Many thanks to all those who prepared this get together, in particular Father Esnault, the Charmille team and all the staff in the residence and a big thank you to all who took part.
