- Date of publication 07-24-2005 The sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Evron who made their first profession
in 1960 decided to have a pre-golden jubilee celebration in Brittany
Why wait until our golden jubilee to have a get together? The 10 French sisters who made Profession in 1960 were unanimous in deciding to meet in May at the Benedictine Monastery of Landévennec in Finistère, the « end of the earth ». One of the group was missing, two were present for 48 hours, while seven profited from a longer stay. Everyone appreciated the warm welcome, the monastic silence, the monks prayer, the singing of the Office 7 times a day in choir, the opportunity to experience a different rhythm of life. Here, time takes its timethere is a presence. God is in this place. The « lectio divina » that the monks practise each day brings about a closeness to Sacred Scripture. They read it, reread it and ruminate it until it impregnates every aspect of their life. It nourishes their life and becomes a light which inhabits each one of the monks. The monastery is like a lighthouse in the night, the night of our lives. That is why it attracts so many visitors who in reality are looking for peace and a meaning to their lives.
Thanks to an understanding guest master, our group is able to use a room for sharing, not always in a low voice! We shared about where we live, our apostolic activities, the life of our congregation and the meaning today of apostolic religious life. Then, when everyone was present, we were able to use a special dining room to celebrate our being together. Nothing was missing: the tablecloth, the flowers, the wine, the little gifts..then we shared memories of the past, looked at photographs and gave free rein to our comments!
Those who arrived first enjoyed the walks or visits by car around the Crozon peninsula: its wild coast line covered in gorse, little fishing ports, magnificent headlands surrounded by a sea of blue and green; a stop from time to time to eat pancakes on the pleasant terraces, a bit fresh at this time of year. But it didn't matter; one cannot come to Brittany without eating pancakes! During a stay in this monastery it is possible to learn how to prepare to listen to the Gospel for the following Sunday. One of the monks is available to help any volunteers to experience the « lectio divina » practised in many monasteries. Some were happy to take part and savoured the text which they later shared among themselves. The sharing was very enriching and provided an experience that would not easily be forgotten.
The sisters of the same group who are in Canada, England and Peru were very much present in spirit as we looked back at the past and also during times of prayer. This time together strengthened the bonds of affection and friendship.
Rendez-vous in 5 years time for the golden jubilee!
