Life of the communities

A Feast in honour of Perrine

1- All the congregation - Date of publication 08-13-2004
On Saturday 7th August, there was a surprise for everyone in the community. Very early in the morning a paper flower had been placed at the foot of the cross on each tomb in the sisters’ cemetery. It was a way of symbolising the unity between heaven and earth, and the communion with all the sisters who have made the congregation what it is today.

At 9 a.m. the associates from Africa, England, Canada and France came together: it was an opportunity for getting to know one another better, and sharing the way meetings are organised in the different countries and their content. This sharing was important in understanding how each one appropriates Perrine’s message and lives it out in the context of their family and work. But the time was too short…… it was time to see the video-cassette of the history of the congregation, just finished in time for this week of festivities. It was enjoyed by all the spectators, showing the long history of the congregation and giving a glimpse of the life of the congregation today in the different countries where it is implanted. The web site which had just opened this week was quickly presented.

At 3 p.m. associates, sisters, host families and many other friends who had helped in preparing the festivities came together for a solemn mass in the Evron Basilica. More than 500 people were present. The opening procession introduced an atmosphere of celebration: one by one the associates and sisters came forward carrying earth from one country or a basket of fruit from another; Peru was represented as a sign of the unity between all the communities. In his homily, Bishop Maillard, of the Laval diocese, emphasised how the presence of a religious congregation in a diocese can open us to the universal Church. This was also expressed by the presence of several priests from different dioceses in France and also from Africa, England and Ireland. Among them was Fr. Peter McDonough, hearing impaired priest, who translated the service in sign language. The Notre Père was proclaimed in this language. The offertory procession accompanied by singing and African drums was greatly appreciated.

As the guests were so numerous a toast was offered in the festival hall in Evron. Then, the associates returned to their host families while the others partook of a festive meal in the community. Every one was feeling tired but energy was needed for the following day when three of our African sisters were to make their Final Profession in the Congregation.
