Who can fathom the marvels of God? How can we relate an experience which has had a profound impact on us in such a short time?

Who can fathom the marvels of God? How can we relate an experience which has had a profound impact on us in such a short time?
Indeed this is what took place on the week-end of October 22-24th of October 2004 in Filey, Yorkshire in England. Some thirty Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Evron coming from Africa, Canada, France and various communities in England were gathered to celebrate 100 years of presence in England. October 23, exactly 100 years ago 12 sisters from France came to Filey to start a new mission. As we stood in the station commemorating the courageous and audacious women who left their native land to establish a school in the seaside town of Filey, a train arrived in the station. It is needless to say that we could feel the sense of emotion and awe which arose from the crowd which witnessed this event. As the week-end went on many one surprise did not await the other. The group gathered in the Filey Evron Centre for the official presentations, followed by the viewing of the video “Journey of Hope: A tribute to the pioneering spirit of the Sisters of Charity of our Lady of Evron”, prepared and produced by Sisters Anne Marie Crowley and Phyllis Hughes. The video captures many incidences of History covering 3 centuries, in picture and symbol.
The delicious buffet meal was followed by a very meaningful service in memory of our sisters and friends gone before us, in St. Oswald’s Church, a very old, now Anglican Church. The ecumenical spirit is very evident in this community and speaks highly of the efforts made at the very beginning by the sisters to “be for all people”. The four o’clock Celebration of the Eucharist was one of the main features of the week-end, with Bishop Crowley as main celebrant, the Benedictine Abbey of Ampleforth and a number of priests concelebrating. There were also representatives from the various denominations who participated in the ceremony. A very beautiful and significant procession manifested the presence of each country where the sisters are living. This beautiful celebration was continued by a buffet supper prepared by the parishioners for all those present. This was a wonderful time of exchange and sharing.

The week-end ended with a detour trip to York and a lively party with all the sisters, where fun and games added to the spirit of the already friendly atmosphere. Every one returned home changed by the experience of a true community sharing week-end in the spirit which would make Perrine Thulard happy and proud.
