Greetings to you all from Jícamarca anexo 22, Perù!!

Before I leave to attend our General Chapter in France, let me give you a little update on our mission here in Jícamarca.

The school year began in March and we had quite a few new pupils coming to the classroom to do their homework, so we had to extend the working space. Because we had built the classroom using wood it did not take long to move one partition adding an additional 4 metres. We now have enough space for approximately 35 pupils to attend. The children are delighted with this new area which is reserved for 5th and 6th grades and secondary level students.

Each day we have from 20 to 30 children attending, so the project has been very worthwhile…

With the beginning of the school year all the other activities began, as well. And once again, the various crafts involving many women and young people continue to be popular. Thanks to a generous donation from some friends in the States we now have tables for everyone improving the working space considerably. Some new benches have also been made so the Capilla is beginning to be filled up !!

The beginning of June saw the commencement of our program in preparation for first Holy Communion. 12 of our young people are preparing for this important step. Please keep them in your prayers. They will celebrate this Sacrament in December. Each Sunday these children try to attend our celebration taking an active part in preparing the Liturgy.

In June also, our Bishop, Norberto Strottmann, visited the parish. The visit opened with a mass in the parish church, Cruz de Motupe. 9 of us went down to welcome him. During the offertory procession each Capilla, or chapel, in the parish presented a symbol representing their presence in the area. Our symbol was a candle, representing our lack of electricity but also the light of Christ in our lives. The following Thursday, the Bishop met with representatives of all of the Capillas in the Valle and again 9 people from our Capilla came with us. Each coordinator spoke about how things were going in their Capilla. A most pleasant exchange took place, with the bishop giving words of encouragement to each one of us.

The highlight for us in our Capilla, Sagrada Familia, was having the bishop come to say Mass for the school located in our Capilla. The children sang beautifully and read with such confidence and expression. We were so proud of them! He also visited the college to meet all the teachers and pupils in the secondary sector. Afterwards we had a buffet in our house for about 18 people, representatives from the school, from this area and the clergy.

July 2 we had some baptisms in the Capilla and this was my last Mass there before leaving for France.

On July 9, 25 children and some parents accompanied us to a memorial service for the prisoners and Irish sisters killed during the terrorist years in the prison.

I hope to meet some of you during my time in England, Ireland and Wales. I will have some updated photos for you to see and we can exchange some stories.
