Freeze Frame: how does Jesus meet people?

Jesus response: “whatever you have done for the least of my little ones, you have done it for me.”

“I was in prison and you came to see me….In so far as you have done it to one of these little ones who are my brothers and sisters, you have done it to me.” The subject for our last meeting of the year, centred on meetings with Jesus, was this passage from Matthew's Gospel (25,34-40). This well known text raises several questions when we examine it a little.

The first thing we notice is the context in which these words are spoken: the Judgement. A word that is sometimes misunderstood, in a moralising way, as if God was on the look out for our least failings. Here, on the contrary, we are struck by the kindness of God: it is quite simply a question of practising solidarity, of doing to others what we would like them to do to us. God does not ask us to be super-theologians or intransigent ascetics, but simply to let ourselves be moved by the suffering of our neighbour. All the same, it is important not to misunderstand the importance - negative or positive - of our actions and our words. Over and above the charity expressed spontaneously, there is another dimension: the person to who I bring (or refuse) a little comfort is the sign of the presence of God on earth. Better still, it “is” God present.

We are here at the heart of the charism of the Congregation, the initial intuition of its foundress: TO SERVE JESUS-CHRIST IN THE PERSON OF THE POOR. This can be lived out and told in many ways and each one had at least an example to share with the group.

At the end of our meeting, we chose as the main theme for our meetings next year: the humanity of Jesus Christ. So, if this theme interests you or questions you, if you want to share with others your experience and your reflections, if you want to look at your life as a student, as a young professional, or some one looking for work, in the light of the Gospel, all this with great simplicity, respect and friendliness, then do not hesitate to join us! You are free to come once, “just to see”, or for longer, we would be happy to welcome you whoever you are. The next meeting is on the 1st October! In Evron, Mayenne, France.
