When young people meet

2- in France - Date of publication 04-17-2005
the group of young people who meet in Evron six times a year on Saturday afternoon are continuing to reflect on the theme of meetings with Jesus. The 19th March, like Peter, James and John in Gethsemane, they tried to understand Jesus feelings as he faced imminent death.

On Saturday, 19th March, eleven of us came together, perhaps a little like the disciples, to meditate on the Passion of Christ, and more particularly his prayer in Gethsemane. Peter, James and John were close to Him, just as they were at the Transfiguration, but in very different circumstances. Jesus is alone, the three disciples are asleep…….and even if they had been awake would they have been able to comfort him? Jesus knows well what is awaiting him: the cross. It is a time for taking stock before passing on. He is alone. Twice he moves away from the others and prays in agony to His Father, then a third time he holds himself ready: “May Your will be done.”
These three prayers correspond in a way to Peters' three denials and the three times Jesus asks him: “Do you love me?”
The humanity of Jesus, which is once more revealed to us, reminds us of the solitude our dear ones often have to face when they are dying.

After a tea break, we listened to and read a text by Charles Singer illustrating the experience of Jesus, his questions and doubts, his anguish and the temptation to abandon his mission; as well as the way he turns to the Father offering himself as he is. A link is made with the spirituality of Perrine Thulard. Seeing her as she invites her Sisters “to offer themselves and all their actions to God, in union with the offering Jesus Christ made of himself to his Father while he lived on earth.” This is an extract from her first rule of life for the sisters, written in 1709.

Before we separated we shared our news, seriously or with bursts of laughter, while waiting for the next meeting on the 14th May.

     Looking forward to meeting again.
